We'd better get right to it, today - without my usual chit-chat. We have some pretty serious things going on out there - for both online business owners and consumers!

Before we start, I will say this: as the economy tanks, the scams will get worse. So, it is definitely “buyer beware” time.

A couple of iCop members have recently had similar problems with their web sites being compromised. Before we go into detail, the first thing you need to realize about this is: it can only happen if your web host isn't keeping your servers secure enough.

Anyone with a web site needs to be aware of these kinds of hacker problems! Let's begin here:

------------
Hi jl,

My sites were banned by my host yesterday for spamming. Turns out someone hacked my server (PHPlist vulnerability is suspected) and spammed away.

They even created new email addresses while I was in Cpanel deleting them. It was a race.

All sites are back up now, but it too a sleepless night and almost 24 hrs to clean up that mess.

Maybe you could ask our members to check their email accounts for their domains on their servers if they use PHPlist?

We are not absolutely sure it's PHPlist, but HostGator told me any opensource software like this is vulnerable.

I couldn't find anything yet on the PHPlist forum referring to this either.

If you publish this info, I could provide you with a list of what HostGator had me do to remedy this. It may save someone the same headaches I went through.

Have a great day,

Monique

Monique's web host sent her the following message:

"Joomla/WordPress/PhpNuke/PhpBB and many other applications undergo semi regular release schedules for minor bug fixes/feature enhancements/minor security updates and some .x releases to patch major security holes. This also applies to things like WordPress Plugins/Joomla Components.

There are people who try and find any of these applications to exploit and use for their profit (spam/phishing/etc).”

They suggested she routinely check for and apply these updates.

This brings up the question: Would it be safer to forego opensource and purchase software instead?

The answer is YES!

The host also gave her a list of things to be sure she changed after this attack:

  • Change passwords - to hosting account AND cPanel (or whatever administrative panel you use)
  • Remove any email accounts you didn't add yourself
  • Check to be sure the email address for the contact on the hosting account is YOURS
  • If you use a email account such as Yahoo/Gmail/etc., change that password, too
  • Clean your local PC to be sure it isn't hosting any malicious software, called “bots”
  • Change the password in PHPlist or any other opensource software being hacked

Monique started a thread in the WebProWorld forum. You can find additional solutions and preventive actions in more detail here:

Here's a nice and FREE little program that helps to find out and eliminate anything using our PC's as a means to send spam, It takes about 5 seconds flat to know:

It Can Literally Cost You Your Business!

Dennis Gaskill of BoogieJack.com had a similar problem. In this case, PHP scripts were used by a hacker who, it appears, was trying to siphon traffic from Dennis' site and at the same time, trying to boost his/her own site's popularity through the popularity and credibility Dennis' site had at the time.

The sad story is that Dennis lost his Google ranking to a point where his traffic went from 80,000 unique visitors per month to less than 5,000.

Since Dennis is a much better writer than I, I'm going to point you to his account of what happened and what he has had to do to fix it. The damage was done before he realized what was happening!

This is a mess you can't believe and it's costing Dennis his income. He's started a new affiliate program in an attempt to bail himself out. Since Dennis' products are of the top-notch variety, you might want to join that program while you're over there.

In any event, please don't fail to read his experience - and learn!

Some Email Regarding Scams

Here we go, again! Thanks to those writing in. I wouldn't be able to pass these alerts along without you.

Hi jl,

I'm still incensed about the latest Russell Brunson marketing ploy. Everyone and his dog are touting this 'amazing deal for only $10' and when you get inside trying to buy it... you get socked with a $29.95 shipping & handling fee - for a frikking CD?

Yet the big gurus keep on advertising it for $10 - well, buster, in my math it's $40 minus a nickel!

I backed right out - I don't care if he's selling youth in a bottle, I'm not paying $40 for something he offered for $10 - I can see $3.95 S&H but almost $30?

Why not be HONEST on the sales page and tell everyone it's $39.95? Whatever it was/is - he can KEEP IT! And on top of that, there was no PayPal option - why? Because you were also getting registered in some dang coaching program at a monthly fee while you got his "$10" awesome deal.

Well, there's *my* 2 cents worth. :)

Take good care,

Donna

The next one is about a company that claims you can “SLASH credit card fraud” by using their company.

------------
jl;

Since you're on the subject of bad business, I thought I'd pass along a reference to a "service" called IfByPhone that [appears to be] nothing but a rip off.

Rather than retype the details, I'll refer you to my blog posting on the subject and the comments that resulted.

tinyurl.com/59hwhk

Looking at my blog and theirs at http://tinyurl.com/4ckm73 it's rather pathetic/amusing to see how they back pedal when I call them to task.

Not surprisingly, they stopped accepting my posts on their blog, and probably wish they'd never started.

This one might be worth passing on to your readers - I'm sure a lot of them accept credit cards.

Comments on Specifics in Last Week's Newsletter

Hi jl,

I read with interest the comments from Jane about the hype surrounding a recent product launch.

You stated that nobody seems to care that they are lies. I respectfully have to disagree with you there. Rick Butts recently set off a firestorm when he made a post on his blog that we unsubscribe from every list that emailed us about Stompernet. There were over 200 comments left on that post and the overwhelming majority are from people who are fed up and aren't going to take it anymore.

I also received another message that a well-known marketer had come out against these kinds of activities. I had to laugh when I read it because this particular clown declared that I should “mind my own business” when I developed iCop. Called me a “self-appointed watch-dog.”

Now, he's all self-righteous about pointing his OWN finger, albeit, he refuses to name names. So, at the same time he gives the appearance of kicking their butts, he protects them. Says it doesn't matter who it is.

Well, I beg to disagree! It damn well DOES matter who's pulling these sharpie little bits of business! How does it help to say, “You're a bad boy, but that's okay, I'll protect your identity.”

I guess when money gets tight, and people can't spend it like water, they get a bit more concerned about what's put in their faces.

But, as far as me being impressed at a few of the gurus taking stands against some of the more unsavory marketing tactics now - I just see it as ... too little, too late!

Had so many folks objected when all this started - back when it was deemed that WWW stood for Wild, Wild Web - it wouldn't be such an issue, today.

Let's hope it really makes a difference, even it IS late coming!

Gotta love this next message!

Hi jl,

I see no need for you to apologize for printing something that some [deleted] found offensive. Some people simply have no sense of humor. Forget them. Besides, as you well know, you can't please all of the people all of the time.

You're right; everyone is perfectly entitled to take things as they see fit, but must you then apologize every time somebody takes offense to something?

You must be getting soft jl. It seems to me that in the past you didn't care so much about offending people - that's what I always liked about you. Please go back to being the same ol' offensive jl we all love! :-)

Best Regards,

Ed Andrist

Leaving You With a Smile

Say WHAT?

Three friends from the local congregation were asked, "When you're in your casket, and friends and congregation members are mourning over you, what would you like them to say?"

Artie said: "I would like them to say I was a wonderful husband, a fine spiritual leader, and a great family man."

Eugene commented: "I would like them to say I was a wonderful teacher and servant of God who made a huge difference in people's lives."

Al said: "I'd like them to say, "Look, he's moving!"
