Last week, I sadly reported we had a few baby ducks here on my little lake. But, the turtles got 'em. Life (and death) in the wild.

Five baby squirrels made it, though. They're still feeding and cavorting in my yard every day. I named the runt “Piglet.” I'd be worried about him except he's such a little scrapper.

Piglet stays tiny - probably because of his particular diet. The others eat the corn I throw out. But, Piglet is quite the connoisseur. He only wants the sunflower seeds I put out for the birds.

Even if I couldn't tell by his size, I'd be able top pick him out. He's the one always nosing around trying to find the seeds, rather than just picking up the corn.

In fact, when I go out to scatter food for the various critters, he practically jumps out of the tree to get there first. After he's gobbled up all the sunflower seeds, he comes right up on my patio and sits up - looking in the door - demanding more.

I'm happy to report, the lame mallard is doing much better so the rest of The Boys aren't being quite so mean to him. But then, Samantha (the female muscovy duck) is still standing by her man, so he's pretty well protected.

Newsletter Recommendation

I don't usually recommend anything from folks who aren't iCop members. However, this guy is so good, I'm going to make an exception.

Derek Gehl took over The Internet Marketing Center after Cory Rudyl was killed in a race car accident. In my opinion, Derek is hands-down the smartest and most straight-forward “guru” out there.

He actually still does a REAL ezine. It isn't weekly, but it's regular. And, it's always FULL of terrific information. I read every word!

You can subscribe at the URL below. You'll find the subscribe box in the left column. The page has one of those MOST annoying “flop-in” windows (my term), but it's easy enough to click off.

I've never “met” Derek, but I'm extremely impressed with him. He has a lot to teach and, even more importantly, he's a straight-shooter!

Speaking of Gurus ...

This is my pick for Bozo of the Year. I clicked a link last week assuming I would be taken to the sales letter for a product I was reading about. Instead, it led to a “squeeze page.”

Yep - that's right! This moron wanted my name and email address before I could see his bloody SALES LETTER! I ignored the info box and clicked “Learn More.” Got an error message insisting I fill out the information.

Under the info box is a button that reads, “Free Instant Access.” Well, I reckon so - it was a damn sales letter I was trying to read! Except, it wasn't “free.” I was to pay - TO READ HIS SALES LETTER - by subscribing to his bloody list! In a pig's WAZOO!

How big a guru do you have to be to get away with something so stupid?

Firefox and Thunderbird

I've been using the Firefox browser and Thunderbird email client for quite some time - and love them. Recently, I downloaded the newest versions and was pleasantly surprised.

Thunderbird has now added a process to catch spelling mistakes - as you type. Like MSWord, incorrect words instantly show a red underline. This is fabulous and saves tons of time with Spellcheck.

Another added feature ... If you're working on an email and don't send it right away, it's automatically saved in your “Drafts” folder. I can't tell you how many times I've lost a working email when I got distracted before I had this feature.

Did you know Firefox has a feature allowing you to customize Google? It helps your search by adding extra information (like links to Yahoo, Ask.com, MSN, etc.) and removing unwanted information (like ads and spam).

It has a list of about 20 features. It's NOT spyware, and it's free. You can read all about it and install it here:

Affiliates vs. Advertising

I wonder how many people ever think about this ...

When you set up an affiliate program, you are going to offer a percentage of the amount of the sales the affiliates make as a commission. Folks seem to think these commissions have to be fairly high to get the affiliates to make the sales.

I'm not quarreling with that. But, looked at from a different direction, is this the best bang for your buck?

Using a middle-of-the-road product price of $49.95, and a commission of 50%, the owner clears just about $25 on each sale. But, the point is, this owner has SPENT $25 for every sale.

Let's carry this a step further. In the interests of using easy numbers, if you have one affiliate sale a day, you have spent $175 in a week. And, $700 in a month.

How much advertising could you buy for that same $700? A lot? You bet!

Now, I know, the theory is the affiliates will do the advertising for you. But, do they? Or, do they simply put it on their web sites and send the information to their lists - assuming they HAVE lists?

Let's assume they DO have lists. How big ARE their lists? And, how many times do you think they will pitch your product before they move on to the next one? Or, maybe they run a continuous small ad people get used to and start ignoring.

How many people can YOU send fresh advertising to every month for $700? Of course, there's the up-front money. Advertising is paid for before the sales are made, and $700 may be a lot of money to you before you make any sales.

So, start with $100. Online, you can still get a lot of advertising for a hundred bucks. Then, put aside that 50% of your sales you'd have paid out in commissions, and increase your advertising next time around.

Yes, it'll take some discipline. And, yes, you need to choose your advertising venue carefully. But, as I like to ask, “Are you in business, or not?”

If you think having affiliates is easier, I question that. Affiliates can be a PITA, and the ones who are, rarely make the sales.

If you still want to pay commissions, find a few people you know do well as affiliates and work out joint ventures with them.

It's something to think about. I believe we get so used to doing things in a certain way (like the “necessary” affiliate programs), we sometimes fail to consider a different approach that may work better.

Leaving You With a Smile

Worms

A professor of chemistry wanted to teach his class a lesson about the evils of liquor, so he produced an experiment that involved a glass of water, a glass of whiskey, and two worms.

"Now, class, observe closely the worms," said the professor putting a worm first into the water. The worm in the water writhed about, happy as a worm in water could be.

The second worm, he put into the whiskey. It writhed painfully, and quickly sank to the bottom, dead as a doornail.

"Now, what lesson can we derive from this experiment?" the professor asked.

Johnny, who naturally sits in back, raised his hand and wisely responded, "Drink whiskey and you won't get worms."
