EXCELLENCE can be attained if you - CARE more than others think is wise - RISK more than others think is safe - DREAM more than others think is practical - and EXPECT more than others think is possible.

DUCK UPDATE: No baby ducks, yet. Dora's still sitting on her nest.

You may - or, may not - have noticed you didn't receive an issue of the Trade Journal, last week. I just couldn't get it out. Now, I'm going to whine a while ...

I was SO looking forward to this year! I somehow believed it would be nice and calm and everything would go smoothly. Not!

I do not know how it's come to be the middle of July, and I haven't managed to complete one single thing! Every time I turn around, something else is standing in my way. Unavoidable things come up and disrupt me for days, if not weeks at a time.

A lot of it has been family-related. In fact, this week, my eldest daughter is coming for a visit. Hard to complain about family when you don't see them very often, but they all seem to have life issues at the same time. That time being exactly when I'm trying to get something done - like a re-do of iCop!

I lost a month because the townhouse I'd waited over a year for became available at the worst possible time. And the past two weeks have been filled with a situation that's made me scream and tear my hair out.

Some moron decided he would start an organization exactly like iCop. As a former iCop member for a year, he was quite familiar with what goes on here. He registered his domain name - which but for one letter is an exact copy of yet ANOTHER organization - nearly two years ago.

He also put up web pages that contained iCop's copyrighted material. In many places it was a word-for-word copy. Even the layout of the pages was the same, although he did use a different design. But, when even the metatags are copied ...

When I nailed him for it, he claimed he had used a service called elance.com and that some guy in Romania (for crying out loud) “wrote” the copy and sold it to him. This guy has since disappeared, of course.

He apologized profusely and removed some of the most blatant plagiarized material. Then, he wanted to ARGUE with me about the rest of it! Although I have changed site designs, our material was written by one of BEST copywriters around and I haven't changed THAT since the year 2000! It's the SAME material we had when Bozo was an iCop member! There IS no argument!

But, in the end, I had to get legal counsel to get the jack-leg to remove the rest of our intellectual property. I can only HOPE it's the end. I guess that will be determined by what he replaces it with.

Welcome to the Wild, Wild Web - where a thief and a liar can set himself up an organization claiming to spread ethical behavior among online business owners! Pffffft!

To tell the truth, I'm STILL considering a lawsuit to shut him completely down. This has happened before - maybe it's time for me to make an example of someone.

It's also a travesty to allow an idiot like this - or anyone doing what he has done - to head up an organization like iCop. It gives us ALL a bad name.

What Do You Think?

In our last issue I asked you to look at a web page regarding flash cookies used for targeted advertising. The URL was:

tips.webdesign10.com/flash-cookies-privacy

I just asked you to read it and let me know your opinion on the subject. I didn't get a single response!

This tells me you probably simply don't care.

In a way, I understand that. I think we're so used to having our privacy invaded, we're forgetting we have a RIGHT to privacy. Companies continue to do as they please without regard for the rights of others.

However, there may be light at the end of the tunnel. According to the Washington Post on June 25, 2008:

------------
“Charter Communications the fourth-largest cable operator in the United States, announced yesterday that it has backed off a plan to monitor customers' Internet transmissions.

The company had been planning to harvest the stream of data from each Internet customer for clues to their interests and then make money from advertisers who would use the information to target online pitches.”

Using a Physical Address on Web Sites

I now recommend using a P.O. Box as the contact address on your business web sites. That wasn't always the case. Nine years ago, although iCop would accept a P.O. Box, I recommended using your actual physical address.

But, things change. And, over the past nine years, our world as grown ever more dangerous. I'm a fairly fearless person (no better sense, I guess) but even I have changed to using a P.O. Box.

I still recommend labeling it as “Mailing Address.” Someone once sarcastically stated that would go without saying. Of course it does. That isn't the point.

The point is that a P.O. Box STILL triggers suspicion in many folks - and with good reason. Fly-by-night businesses have used them for years. At least labeling it as “Mailing Address” indicates you also HAVE a physical address.

But, again - times are changing. Today, unless you have clients or customers coming to your place of business in person, there's simply no reason to advertise your physical address to every pervert and jack-ass out there.

I really want to hear from you! Tell me what you think!

Teacher Arrested

NEW YORK -- A public school teacher was arrested today at John F. Kennedy International Airport as he attempted to board a flight while in possession of a ruler, a protractor, a set square, a slide rule and a calculator.

At a morning press conference, the Attorney General said he believes the man is a member of the notorious Al-gebra movement.

He did not identify the man, who has been charged by the FBI with carrying weapons of math instruction. "Al-gebra is a problem for us," the Attorney General said. "They desire solutions by means and extremes, and sometimes go off on tangents in search of absolute values.

They use secret code names like 'X' and 'Y' and refer to themselves as "unknowns," but we have determined that they belong to a common denominator of the axis of medieval with coordinates in every country."

As the Greek philanderer Isosceles used to say, "There are 3 sides to every triangle."

When asked to comment on the arrest, President Bush said, "If God had wanted us to have better weapons of math instruction, he would have given us more fingers and toes."

White House aides told reporters they could not recall a more intelligent or profound statement by the President.
