EXCELLENCE can be attained if you - CARE more than others think is wise - RISK more than others think is safe - DREAM more than others think is practical - and EXPECT more than others think is possible.

If you are an iCop member in good standing - meaning you responded to my email check last month - you should have received two emails from me in the past 10 days.

If you did NOT receive two emails from me, please let me know. I want to be SURE your email addresses are working properly and that you received the information on what you need to do. I will shortly begin bringing you up to date on the ways we will be making iCop the ONLY organization of this type worth anyone's time.

This week, we need to deal with some privacy issues, but next week ...

We'll talk about what businesses need to do when the economy tanks. Remember - for 15 years, I worked with companies in financial trouble: keeping then out of bankruptcy and turning them around.

Folks often think that involves basically firing everyone and hiring new people. Not true. The idea is to find, and correct what's being done wrong.

Many of my clients were family-owned, mid-size companies. That would have made it pretty hard to fire everyone, even if I wanted to. I DID find a thief, or two, in the woodpile of a couple of larger companies, but that's another story.

My busiest time at all this was during the economic turn-down of the '80s and early '90s. So, I'm no stranger to knowing what to do when the economy goes south.

Before you can correct anything, you have to find out the problem. Obviously, not every company had the same problem - other than the basic ones caused by low cash-flow.

In looking for the problems, I got to see what landed them in trouble. I discovered several things many folks do that increases the problem, rather than alleviating it. These particular things are nearly universal - everyone seems to do them.

So, next week, I'm going to show you how to avoid these mistakes, STAY in business and come through the turn-down with, not only a minimum of problems but, maybe, even ahead of the game!

Think the Gurus Don't Sell Your Info?

Here's an email from an iCop member:

------------
Hi jl,

I'm going to be sending this to my lists, but I thought I'd also send it to you because it goes to show that many of the gurus DO NOT CARE about privacy.

---
Your privacy is being breached. Read now for proof.

Today is a holiday in Canada, but I came online to get things ready for our launches.

I opened my emailbox to find a message from Matt Bacak, a well known "guru"... recommending a product from another "guru", Justin Blake.

(It's basically a self-hypnotizing thing).

I read through the sales letter.

I had something niggling in the back of my mind, so I decided to check out the privacy policy.

~gasp~ !

If you have bought from him OR were thinking about it:

Fair warning: He will sell your information to anyone who wants it! (Except financial - at least he admits that).

He also states you have no recourse and cannot accuse them of spam. Eesh!

Proof: www.manifestationmeditation.com/privacy.html

Whether the product is good or not, the fact is "gurus" should be protecting your private information, not sharing it.

Also - another tidbit: The copyright on the privacy policy states "Mining Gold Corporation". Is that him, or did he "copy" the privacy policy?

Kinda scarey. His main page says, "JB Virtual Enterprises, Inc. PO Box 6543; Traverse City, MI. 49696 231-930-4043"

Not - Mining Gold Corporation.

So there you have it - it could in fact, be both companies selling your info!

Shawn Casey's "Mining Gold" (All his products actually), but I researched the "Mining Gold Corporation" Privacy policy. It states:

"We supply our member's contact information, to our business partners..."

"We may also supply other companies with contact information, for mail offers we believe would be of interest to our members, with or without comepnsation from those companies."

"If you order services or products directly from our company, we use the personal information you provide to process that order. We do share this information with outside parties that we do business with."

Justin Blake's has been formatted and claims permission to use the privacy policy from Mining Gold. They've revised theirs to say:

---
"HOW INFORMATION MAY BE USED

The use of information as described below may or may not be how information that is collected is customarily used by this site. While actual use of any information collected may be used quite conservatively, you must assume that it is not. You must assume that information collected is shared with other persons or entities for commercial purposes. While this is uncommon in practice, you must assume that it is as you make your decision whether or not to view or interact with this website. This type of shared information may include your name, address, phone number, email address and buying habits, as well as other information. This information may be used for general commercial solicitation by this website or other persons it is sold to, rented to, or shared with.

SPAM

By providing to this website information that forms the basis of communication with you, such as an email address, you waive all rights to file complaints concerning unsolicited email or spam from this website since, by providing such information, you agree to receive communication from us or other marketing organizations. However, all email communication with you shall contain an 'unsubscribe' link where you may notify the website that you no longer wish to receive solicitations or information from the website and your name will be removed from the general solicitation database."
---

The fact is: they're admitting to SELLING and SHARING your private information.

Do you really want that?

Be very careful about the privacy policies of companies.

Every company should have one - and if there isn't one, you might want to avoid joining (Unless you don't care about spam or phone calls!)

We maintain our own newsletters, but we never rent, share, sell or trade our lists or customers in any way. Why would we?

It's pretty sad that these guys complain about spam... but are a major part of the problem.

Okay, safelists - we expect to get spam because the email addresses are open for everyone to see (usually).

But a purchase from a 'guru' product?

We maintain our own newsletters, but we never rent, share, sell or trade our lists or customers in any way. Why would we?

Protect your privacy. If everyone avoids companies that admit they sell their private info, these companies will be forced to stop.

(But it is consumers who need to be wise to it!)

This is exactly the kind of thing that makes me want to move iCop AWAY from the gurus and so-called “internet marketing.”

Over time, too many of them have thrown all decency, all customer service and all consumer protection to the winds. They got greedy and simply don't care!

It's about making an extra buck in whatever slimy way they can - including SELLING your names, email addresses, and whatever other personal information they want!

As a legitimate online business owner - believe me - you do NOT want to be associated with or confused with these morons.

Speaking if Privacy, or Lack Thereof ...

You may remember I wrote about Charter Communications beginning to track their customers online, then sell their surfing information to ad companies. But, then, they stopped.

Seemed like a good thing - but Charter is only ONE company. I highly recommend that you read this article on other ISPs doing the same thing. Some of them are named.

Next week, I'll tell you about the newest - and most grievous - method of spying on the consumer of all! Done by none other than the government of the USA. And their information gathering will include spying on the buying habits of people from every country in the world.

I really want to hear from you! Tell me what you think!

Leaving You With a Smile

"And, Then the Fight Started ..."

When I got home last night, my wife demanded that I take her someplace expensive ... so, I took her to a gas station.

And, then the fight started ...

******************************

My wife and I were sitting at a table at my high school reunion, and I kept staring at a drunken lady swigging her drink as she sat alone at a nearby table.

My wife asked, 'Do you know her?'

'Yes,' I sighed, 'She's my old girlfriend. I understand she took to drinking right after we split up those many years ago, and I hear she hasn't been sober since.'

'My God!' says my wife, 'who would think a person could go on celebrating that long?'

And, then the fight started ...

******************************

I rear-ended a car this morning. So, there we were alongside the road and slowly the other driver got out of his car. You know how sometimes you just get soooo stressed and little things just seem funny?

Yeah, well I couldn't believe it... he was a DWARF!

He stormed over to my car, looked up at me, and shouted, 'I AM NOT HAPPY!'

So, I looked down at him and said, 'Well, then which one are you?'

And, then the fight started ...
